BACKGROUND
UBC Sauder School of Business is a leading academic institution situated within UBC’s award-winning Henry Angus Building. The facility hosts a variety of academic and public events, providing state-of-the-art spaces for lectures, conferences, student gatherings, and networking events. Sauder’s commitment to progressive values and community inclusivity made this project an ideal fit.
THE CHALLENGE
The existing women’s and men’s washrooms on the 2nd floor of the Henry Angus Building no longer aligned with UBC’s vision for inclusivity and accessibility.
The washrooms required an upgrade to support gender inclusivity, adhere to modern safety and building codes, and incorporate sustainable materials to reduce environmental impact.
SOLUTION
In collaboration with HCMA, our team developed a comprehensive renovation plan to create a gender-neutral washroom that adheres to Canadian and BC building codes, along with UBC’s design guidelines. Key elements of the solution included:
- Open Layout: A spacious, open-concept design to accommodate a high volume of users while ensuring accessibility for individuals with mobility needs.
- Inclusive Signage: Clear, inclusive signage to guide users and create a welcoming atmosphere.
- Lighting and Safety: Enhanced safety features, including well-distributed lighting, to foster a secure environment.

IMPLEMENTATION
The renovation involved significant updates to electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems to meet the new facility requirements:
- Electrical Installations: New pot lights and suspended lighting were installed for improved visibility, and power was provided to support automatic faucets and flush valves.
- Plumbing and Fixtures: New sinks, faucets, and toilets with self-powered flush valves were installed, requiring extensive updates to water lines, sanitary systems, and venting.
- HVAC Upgrades: The ductwork was modified, and new diffusers with dampers were installed in each stall to improve airflow and maintain air quality.
- Sprinkler System: A new sprinkler layout was designed and installed, adhering to current safety standards.
